Holden Caufield as "Jim Steele"
Holden Caufield as "Jim Steele"

It was hard to picture.

It made me so damn sad when I thought about it... I knew it wasn't too important, but it made me sad anyway.

He was singing that song, "If a body catch a body coming up through the rye". He had a pretty little voice, too... it made me feel not so depressed anymore.

That was nice. I got a big bang out of that.

That's what I liked about those nuns.

They sound so phony when they talk.

Anyway... I couldn't pray worth a damn.

It was really quite embarrassing, it really was.

And sexy was the last thing I was feeling, I felt much more depressed than sexy.

"Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jim Steele."

I chose these lines from the story because I think they epitomized Holden's character.
Many readers feel like the tone of the story is depressing, and brooding like Holden.
He is ALWAYS depressed about something. He has these crazy feelings all the time about literally nothing.
He has an opinion on everyone, calling the nuns"phony".
He constantly talks about his experiences and how they made him feel.
Although it seems as if he's boring and dry, I love a man that can express his feelings.
